Strategies used to Communicate with your Audience

For this post, I was required to read pieces on the three different types of writing- narrative writing, descriptive writing and argumentative writing. Below are some of the strategies used by each writer to communicate with his/her audience:

1. ALINA (Narrative Writing)

·         Personal/Common Experience – The writer uses his own personal experiences. This is effective in getting the reader to really identify and connect with the readers/audience.

·         Memoir- I think that the fact that this piece is also a memoir added to its value and its ability to effectively connect and communicate with the audience.

·         Choice of words- The writer uses a variety of descriptive words that describe the persons in the story, as well as the events and the different settings. His use and choice of descriptive words make the story even more real to the audience (well at least to me). His use of adverbs and adjectives make the story even more engaging.
·         Dialogue

·         Use of Dialect

·          Appeal to one’s emotions/Use of emotional language- The first sentence in the story is the most powerful one to me. The writer almost seems like he is speaking directly to me about a very sensitive issue. I also noticed that although the writer seemed to write about a seemingly small episode, it was one with a big meaning to him. The writer also told the story in such a way that I felt like I shared his experiences from start to finish.

·         Humour

·         Analogies

2. Lou’s Place (Descriptive Writing)

·         Use of effective sensory details to communicate the point.

·         Powerful imagery- the writer practically painted a picture with words as I was able to literally close my eyes and visual what Lou’s place might have looked like based on what I read.

·         Effective use of descriptive words, phrases and sentences- adverbs, adjectives etc.

·         Appeal to the senses

·         Use of comparisons- (similes, metaphors)

·         I think the fact that the writer is not vague, but go into detail to actually show the reader what he/she means through words in another effective strategy. The thought are not abstract as many concrete examples are used to move the story forward.

·         Effective use of punctuation

3. The Faceless Teacher (Argumentative Writing)

·         Catching the readers’ attention- The writer begins the argument with a very strong, thought-provoking and controversial statement as his first sentence. This strategy will  not only encourage the reader to continue reading the piece, but can also spark some debate.

·         Effective use of literary devices and figurative language to bring out/emphasize points.

·         Compare/contrast

·         Use of Rhetorical questions

·         Cause/Effect

·         Use of appropriate examples and non-examples
